Our History

The Joe Roland Community Center was founded in 2017, under the leadership of lifetime community member Edna Rayford and a dedicated founding board. The Center is located in the unincorporated historic Freedom Colony of St. John at the intersection of rural Caldwell and Bastrop Counties.

Our facility stands on a 10-acre reserve donated by founder John Winn Sr. when the historic Freedom Colony of St. John was formed over 155 years ago. This land represents both our community’s rich heritage and our commitment to its future.

Our Building

The JRCC is housed in the original St. John Regular Baptist Church Building, which had fallen into disrepair before our founding. Our initial mission was to restore this historic structure into a community center that could serve the most prevalent needs of local residents.

Through dedicated volunteer efforts and community support, we’ve transformed this historic building into a gathering place that honors our past while addressing the present needs of our rural community.

Our Work

Since our establishment, the JRCC has:

Our Vision

While we value the longevity of these efforts and the commitment of our volunteers, we recognize the potential the JRCC has to be an even more critical resource to residents. We are currently implementing strategic measures through the [St. John Service Project](#link-to-service-project) to further utilize the Center, demonstrate its benefits to the community, and provide operational and structural support to sustain future success.
